A Riverdale woman in a wheelchair was struck and killed by a Metra train Wednesday night near the station in the Beverly neighborhood, authorities said.
Nina Neely, 86, of the 300 block of East 134th Street in the south suburb, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she was pronounced dead at 11:09 p.m., slightly more than an hour after she was hit by the train.
She was struck at 10:05 p.m. by Metra Rock Island District Line train No. 529 at 95th and Wood streets, said Tom Miller, Metra spokesman. The train was leaving Chicago for Joliet and the incident caused a 45-minute delay, Miller said. The tracks were re-opened by 11 p.m., he said.
No one on the train was hurt and the train was in working condition, Miller said.
Train No. 529 was scheduled to arrive in Joliet at 11:07 p.m. Train No. 530, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 10:47 p.m., was running 50 minutes late, according to Metra's Web site.
