A 73-year-old woman crossing a busy Palatine street on foot was struck by a pickup truck and killed this morning, police said.
The accident occurred just after 6 a.m. at the intersection of Northwest Highway and North Benton Street, police said.
The victim was identified as Aida Guss of the northwest suburb. As she was walking south across the roadway, she was hit by a 2007 Toyota Tundra traveling east through the intersection, police said.
Guss was treated at the scene and taken to Northwest Community Hospital by fire department ambulance. She was pronounced dead there a short time later, police said.
The driver of the truck, a 43-year-old man from Schaumburg, was being questioned by police.
Police were doing an investigation on-scene, and Northwest Highway was blocked between Plum Grove Road and First Bank Drive.
