Two Chicago police officers were hit by a car whose driver was attempting to flee after hitting a pedestrian early this morning, police said. One officer fired at the fleeing car but missed.

Nevertheless, the suspect was captured after a short police car chase and taken into custody.

The incident started about 3:15 a.m. at 10 W. Elm Street, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer.

The condition of the pedestrian who was struck by the vehicle was not known.

One of the officers hit by the fleeing Mercedes-Benz was dragged and sustained a shoulder injury, according to an officer on the scene. He was taken by paramedics to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious condition, according to police and fire officials. His condition was upgraded to good condition later this morning. The second officer who was struck was not seriously injured, the officer on the scene said. Police later said that officer sustained an arm injury, and that it was unclear whether he was struck by the car.

The suspect was stopped at Dearborn and Division streets, police said.
