A man riding a bicycle was struck by a car and critically injured Sunday night in Chicago's Jefferson Park neighborhood.
The accident happened about 11:35 p.m. at the intersection of Montrose and Austin avenues, when a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo hit the cyclist, police said.
The 22-year-old Northwest Side man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and was in critical condition midday today, said Chicago Police News Affirs Officer Laura Kubiak. The driver of the vehicle was issued two citations, Kubiak said.
The Monte Carlo was driving south on Austin when it came upon another vehicle stopped in the middle of the road, despite the stoplight being green, Kubiak said. The Monte Carlo went around the other vehicle on the right and hit the cyclist, who was going west on Montrose, Kubiak said.
The driver of the Monte Carlo stopped, called 911, and talked with a police dispatcher about what to do to help the cyclist, Kubiak said. The dispatcher gave him instructions about what to do, Kubiak said.
The driver was cited for negligent driving and overtaking a vehicle on the right, Kubiak said. The driver's name was not being released.
