One person was killed when a Chicago-bound Amtrak train struck a pedestrian Saturday afternoon in west suburban Downers Grove.

Amtrak Southwest Chief train No. 4 from Los Angeles to Chicago fatally struck a pedestrian on the tracks in Downers Grove about 2:30 p.m., Amtrak spokeswoman Karina Romero said. The DuPage County Coroner’s office was not immediately available to confirm the death.

None of the 147 passengers on the train were injured, Romero said.

The incident caused delays on both Amtrak and Metra trains, which share tracks in the area.

The train that struck the pedestrian was delayed one hour, 29 minutes. Southwest Chief train No. 3 from Chicago to Los Angeles and California Zephyr train No. 6 from the San Francisco Bay area to Chicago were each delayed about 30 minutes, Romero said.

Metra train No. 1316 was scheduled to arrive at Union Station at 3:42 p.m. but is operating about 85 minutes behind schedule. Train No. 1311 was scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 3:46 p.m. but is operating about 55 minutes behind schedule. Train No. 1313 was scheduled to arrive in Aurora at 4:46 p.m., but is operating about 10-15 minutes behind schedule, Metra said.

Amtrak will be conducting a standard investigation, but Downers Grove police are investigating, Romero said. A Downers Grove police spokesman was not immediately available for comment.
